It seems unfair that I should have to purchase another copy of windows when I have one here purchased with my laptop… and linux would be great if it worked with itunes and a few other programs… So is there nothing I can do? For retail version this restriction is not present. You can use any Windows program in Linux using Wine emulator. Elive has a bundled emulator to run Windows applications. Ubuntu has a bigger community, so its better for beginners.

For those crapwares probably the OEM version costs less the software companies pay a part with more RAM and higher spec. Legally, we can not do anything with these : neither create a lighter version out of it nor can change the backup option : the installation DVD is compiled in that way. When buying a OEM pre-installed laptop, actually users are unknowingly accepting their terms and conditions of usage.

The retail version should have it's own activation key. It does work in Vista and 7, just not in XP.

What is likely the problem is that, since the OEM version has already been activated once, it is failing activation again. Activate it over the phone using the option given to you on the failed activation screen, and you shouldn't have a problem activating it.
